Platform games were mostly the preserve of the home consoles during the 8- and 16-bit era, but there were a few on the computers of the time that stood out, Turrican being one of them.

In what could be described as a run-and-gun game, Turrican sees you jumping to and fro, firing a variety of weapons, and using some unique abilities, such as turning into a rolling gyroscope. Aside from a rare scrolling shooter level or two, the vast majority of the game involves exploring levels in search of the exit. The enemies you encounter are abundant, but fortunately you have an energy bar instead of instant death, and searching will yield plenty of extra lives.

In hindsight, a lot of people don't appreciate the European design of the run-and-gun platform genre, and Turrican is probably the quintessential archetype. Having said that, with some patience, there is a rewarding experience here, along with a great soundtrack and good graphic design. Try rushing through it, however, and you might not get far.
