By the time of the first list in 1991, licensed games were ubiquitous, though many of them were of dubious quality. Batman: The Movie bucked the trend by mixing challenging platform segments with innovative driving sections, making this a fan favourite.

The game consists of five levels: two long platform stages, two driving sections (one in the Batmobile, one in the Batwing), and a simple guessing game to advance the plot. Obviously, in the platform levels, you guide Batman, throwing Batarangs and swinging on your Bat-rope or whatever it's called. There are endless goons who get in your way, and both levels are surprisingly long. The driving/flying segments are also quite a lengthy challenge.

Clearly Batman was very well-received at the time, but playing today, I find that having just two platform and two driving levels makes it hard to get into. I think it would've worked better in hindsight if they had 3 of each, but of similar length in total, just to break up the action. Regardless, it's worth a look - but you might want to use save states these days.
