283: Golden Axe

Number 283
(0.7 points)
Golden Axe
1991: 96 (0.5)
1992: 100 (0.2)

Here we have our first double entrant, which pushes it up slightly despite its low position in the two lists in which it was placed. Golden Axe may have been bottom in 1992, but the fact that it survived at all is impressive enough (Kick Off 2 was placed 7th in 1991 but was replaced by its predecessor the following year, and many others never made it past 1991).

Based on the Sega arcade game, Golden Axe lets you choose one of three fantasy warriors, namely a barbarian, an Amazonian warrior or a dwarf. You can slash at your foes with your blade, or collect magic and rain hellfire on them. As is often the case, this makes the list because, unlike quite a few coin-op conversions, it's actually not too bad. Sure, it's not as fluid as either the Mega Drive or the original, and the lack of a second button means jumping isn't all that easy, but it doesn't make a huge impact on the fighting style you employ.

The whole game is here, and it graphically looks the part. I spent many an hour playing the Atari ST version back in the day, especially in two-player mode, and although you'd be much better off sticking with the arcade version these days, it's one of the better beat 'em ups on the platform.
