Grand Monster Slam
1991: 100

To quote the 1992 list, "Bob Wade... we have to thank for the bizarre choice of Grand Monster Slam to prop up the 100. We're still not sure how he managed to get that one past the rest of us..." Well, I think they're being a little harsh, because it's actually quite playable.

Coming from Golden Goblins, a division of Rainbow Arts, Grand Monster Slam is a sports game of sorts, as you kick little blobs known as Beloms, and the object is to get all of them onto your opponent's side at once, then rush through the middle to claim victory. Hitting your opponent with the Beloms will disable them temporarily, enabling you to keep on kicking them over. There are some extra things to keep you interested, such as a mini game where you fend off the Beloms, and stages with a wall that make kicking and running a little more difficult.

If any of this sounds familiar, then you may have played Penguin-kun Wars on the Famicom, MSX and Game Boy, which the developers must have been aware of, given the similarities. Still, If you have an Amiga and want to play something like that, then this is a nice option, and I don't mind it being on the list. I have to say, though, a two-player option would have really made it quite special.
