James Pond: Underwater Agent
1991: 83

The first of three games starring the titular aquatic hero, James Pond was not given rave reviews, but still managed to make the 1991 list.

It's a fun arcade-style action game, unlike its more well-known sequel, where Pond must swim around the ocean, collecting items to solve tasks while eliminating enemy fish by blowing bubbles and popping them, in a very similar manner to Bubble Bobble. The tasks can vary, such as collecting keys to unlock trapped sealife, or placing dynamite under an oil tanker. The colourful graphics and smooth gameplay made it stand out, though the gameplay was perhaps not involved enough to amazed the critics.

I can certainly see myself playing a bit more of this, as it's simple fun that you don't need a big manual to understand. Back in the day I read a lukewarm review for the ST version and decided to avoid it, later picking up the sequel RoboCod, but maybe it's time to give it a chance.
