One sport that came into its own in the 16-bit era was golf, as the power of newer machines made rendering the landscape much easier. Microprose Golf, especially, does a great job of that, but it does much more besides.
Golf games always had to distinguish themselves in various ways, given how straightforward it has been to get the actual game right. Microprose Golf does so with an excellent graphical representation of the course, the 3D camera swooping along as your ball flies. The other ways to extend playability is through different courses and modes of play, and here the game excels too, with a good selection of holes and a then-unprecedented arrangement of game types. In addition to tournament play, you can play head-to-head, threesomes, foursomes and more.
I really enjoyed playing Microprose Golf: it's a solid package, and you always feel in control. I haven't even touched the many different game styles, but clearly it's has a lot to offer. It whips along at a good pace too, so it's still fun to play today.
