Dungeon Master
1991: 16
One of the Atari ST's early classics - and one of, if not the biggest-selling game on the platform - was ranked highly in 1991, but only reaches 203 in my list, since it was never included again. Perhaps it was difficult to stay relevant years later, so it's worth taking a second look at this genre-defining dungeon crawler. As the title suggests, your task is to explore dungeons as a party of four adventurers, with the task of finding a firestaff and defeating Lord Chaos. Instead of creating new randomly generated characters, you have a choice of many different original characters, with different strengths and weaknesses. The game was groundbreaking for the time, taking the relatively recent 3D dungeon crawling concept and adding real-time fighting, dynamic lighting and localised sound effects. Experience is gained by using weapons and skills in the game, rather than gaining points and levelling up. Many games improved on the concepts in this game, but fans of the genre would be advised to go back and try this seminal title.
I've mentioned before that I'm not much of an RPG player, and dungeon crawlers like this are no different. Still, if I had to try one, it would be this, because it definitely ranks up there with some of the most important games in history. It's also very simple for a newcomer to the genre, so I'd suggest you have a go too.
