Richard Garriott's popular Ultima series was rated highly in its fifth incarnation in the 1991 list - indeed, the magazine stated it was "arguably the best role-playing game you'll ever see... or until Ultima VI arrives, anyway". This is particularly interesting as Ultima VI had already come out on the PC, and sure enough, when it finally came to the Amiga, the team reviewed it in May 1992, while replacing Ultima V in that issue's Top 100 list. As a result, it sits much lower in my list than its successor, but that doesn't make it any less worth playing.
In the world of Britannia, you are summoned by Shamino and Iolo from Ultima IV, in a bid to rescue Lord British, after his regent Blackthorn gained control of the land. Three Shadowlords have corrupted his mind, and he rules with an iron fist, so it's up to you to restore Lord British to the throne. As far as the gameplay goes, Ultima V is a cut above its contemporaries, with advanced NPC interactions and a highly non-linear main quest.

I confess that, although I've read plenty about the early Ultima games (credit goes to CRPG Addict for that - now THAT'S a dedicated blog), I have never really played any of them, and RPGs in general are not my strongest suit. Mostly they seem about 10% fun and 90% grinding for EXP, so I'm not the best person to ask about this. Instead, I will just say that the aforementioned CRPG Addict rated Ultima V highest of all the huge amount of CRPGs that he has played. I think that's all you need to know.
