164: PGA Tour Golf

Number 164

PGA Tour Golf
1992: 16

Riding high in the 1992 list, though never picked again, PGA Tour Golf was a very popular entry in the genre at the time.
There are four courses to play on, with both professional and amateur tees. The 3D camera is only used to give you a preview of the hole before you start, along with some advice from a pro. Unlike earlier games which expect you to know the correct yardage of a club and plan your shots accordingly, this judges the distance to the hole and gives you a percentage to hit, making it much easier for newer players to get used to it.

This happens to be perhaps the first golf game I remember playing, on the PC. I found it fun at the time, and still do today. I'm not sure, however, whether it's better or worse than Microprose Golf, but Amiga Power clearly thought it was, putting that at number 50 in the same list, and it was reviewed after this one. I would have to play both for a while to decide, but I think they both deserve a place on the list for sure.
