Imagine if OutRun had been ported properly to the Amiga. Yeah, crazy, but Gremlin did it with Lotus 2.
Following on from Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge - which was featured in all the years of the Top 100 list that this game was not - Lotus 2 replaced the circuit style of driving with a stage system, similar to OutRun, where you must race from one point to another instead of completing laps. Other changes include a multitude of weather conditions and locations, and being able to play in full screen, in addition to two-player split-screen action.

It may feel a little silly that you can't actually crash your car, but the speed and smoothness of the experience is just a pleasure to play, and it's clear how good OutRun could've been if in the right hands. I can certainly see the influence of this and its predecessor on the fun modern racer Horizon Chase Turbo, and it's still fun to come back to now.
