The 16-bit era really was the golden age of graphical adventures, and the fact that this ranks so highly is surely a good sign of a better entry in the genre.
Before Revolution Software wowed the gaming world with Beneath A Steel Sky and the Broken Sword series, they impressed with this tale of a young man called Diermot, who has been captured by a group of man-eating Skorl and held in a dungeon. Using his wits, he escapes with a fellow peasant named Ratpouch, and ventures out to seek Selena, the Temptress of the title. The interface is both simple and yet very advanced, in that you can not only interact with the environment using your inventory, but can also instruct Ratpouch to follow your commands. The attractive graphics add to the appeal, something Revolution continued in their later games.

I loved Beneath A Steel Sky, and had no idea that the same guys made this, but this is certainly worth a look, too. It's very well written, looks great, and has a good interface. What's not to like? Definitely still worth a look.
