Looking at the lists, it's clear that although the Amiga Power team switched their favours between this game and its sequel, in the end it was clear that this was the favourite overall. They're clearly very similar, so let's examine the differences.
You race on different courses around the world, of varying length and difficulty. Some have obstacles to avoid, others are long enough that you have no choice but to refuel during the race. In any case, you are racing against similar-looking cars, gaining points depending on your finishing position. Your view occupies half of the screen, as the other half is used in a two-player game.

If I have to be honest, I think I like Lotus 2 more than this, but it's still a decent game. Racing laps means you have some way of memorising the corners you have to take, and the necessity to fuel your car mid-race certainly adds to the strategy a bit. It's a bit of a toss-up, really, so I'm glad they're both on the list. What about Lotus 3, though?
